Each
piece of stoneware is 'hand-thrown' from native Ohio clay on
a traditional treadle potter's wheel, entirely shaped and formed
by the craftman's hand. A
great advantage of stoneware is the nonporous quality, making
pieces stain proof and 100 percent oven and dishwasher safe.
Designs will not fade in the dishwasher. Unlike some china and
pottery, Gus Sherman's paintings are under the glaze which preserves
and protects the natural beauty and intensity of the colors.
Whether pieces are used everyday or for decorative purposes,
satisfaction is guaranteed.
Gus
mixes his own colors, or "slips," by combining raw
pigments and very fine clays. The blue is made from pure cobalt,
the brown from iron, and the green from copper. Then he meticulously
hand paints every cup, bowl, plate, one-at-time, with his lovely
bluebird, iris, blueberry or ivy design.
Susan's
special glazes contain no lead andare applied over a piece's
entire surface before firing in a kiln to a fiercely hot 2200
F. Firing gives the stoneware a magnificent finish, literally
turning the glaze ingredients into glass and fusing clay and
glaze together to form true stoneware.
