Gus
and Susan have had a pottery business for over 30 years at their
home in Athens County, producing hand thrown and painted stoneware.
While keeping the popular bluebird and iris decorations, they expand
their glaze and designs every year. An intriguing selection of stoneware
pieces offers customers a variety of choices.
Besides
their numerous wholesale customers, including The Ohio Designers
Craftsman, Gus and Susan have designed dinnerware and yearly plates
for Glenlaurel, a Scottish
Inn located in the Hocking Hills region. The dinnerware is used
daily at breakfast and lunch and is featured in the gift shop. A
new wall plate has been designed every year since 1995. Guests receive
a yearly plate as part of a gift basket when they visit the Inn
on their anniversary. Gus and Susan have also designed commemorative
plates for the Village of Amesville, The Rabbit Hash General Store
in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, and ODC galleries in Cincinnati and Cleveland.
They have been the featured potters at Mt. Leather & General
Store in Athens for 25 years, stamping each pot made for the store
with the ATHENS logo--a favorite of patrons. Marietta Run Clay stoneware
has been sent all over the world from the Athens store. Good customer
relations and a commitment to quality and reliability are an ongoing
part of Marietta Run Clay.
Susan
offers students internships in the
shop--an opportunity to learn the pottery business firsthand. While
Gus's MS has slowed his pace, his painting has remained an important
part of the business. He painted mugs for the MS Society for the
2003 MS.
